Online reputation for bloggers| How and why to measure it
0Of late I have been reciving quite a few queries on blogging tips and how to monetize blogs from fellow bloggers and blogging enthusiasts, who want to delve into world of blogging. So instead of answering individual queries I decided to start a weekly series where I address one issue at a time and share it on my blog {because that’s what I love beside photography}. If you have any queries shoot me a mail at rekhakakkar@lifezing.com. I would be happy to answer them here on blog.
With ever increasing popularity of social media marketing and online marketing and the way bloggers are turning to professional bloggers and are looking to earn money from their blogs, there is a great need for good online reputation.
Most of the brands and PR firms look for the blogger who have a big audience base and have authoritative and reputable blogging voice.
Numbers and me generally do not go well together and always share a love hate relationship {I hate them when I have to do number crunching but love when I see the resulting numbers}, but they are extremely useful for measuring progress, so some number crunching helps a lot. Yes! your facebook and twitter friend/follower list matters, but so do the specific area and topics as well as how influential your friends and followers are when comes to measure your online influence.
How to measure online reputation?
There are many ways to manage your online reputation each with its many pros and cons and are useful in many ways. Though these may not be most accurate to measure your online reputation but provide a fair idea about it.
Social Media Influence
Most of the bloggers these days have active social media presence too. every time you engage with people on social media platform like
twitter, face book or google etc you influence other people who may be your followers {if they choose to RT their followers too} or friends or people in your circle in facebook or google plus.

I find these two tools {klout and Peerindex} very effective in measuring the social influence.
Klout measures social influence by your ability to drive reaction from your audience, each of your social media engagements
is measured on the scale of 1-100 which is derived from the data based on twitter, LinkedIn, facebook, foursquare and google plus.

PeerIndex is another tool which is based on an algorithm that measures the influence on the speed with which we share
content on particular segment or topics. It draws a rank when there is certain action like retweet or comment on particular type of content.

If you are Indian on twitter this pinstrom list {which is based on your klout and peerindex score} calculates your India
rank on twitter. To large extent these two ways help you to measure social media influence i.e. the effectiveness to spread message on twitter or facebook etc but not necessarily your online Influence too.

I say so, because I have seen many popular bloggers with an average to low klout and PeerIndex score because they may not necessarily be engaging with people much on social media. So good old web analytics is another great tool in case of bloggers, as blog readership is another sure shot way of measuring online influence in such cases and factoring in this score can help to estimate correct values of influence.
Is online influence and online reputation same thing?
Often online influence and online reputaion are taken as same thing, but these are clearly two different things. While above three tools tell you how influential you are, but your social media influence is good or bad that’s different story altogether, and may cause potential
damage to your personal or professional reputation.

To check your online reputation first step is always an online search. However narcissist it may sound, but do search your name in google, bing or yahoo often to keep a tab about latest being said online about you, you never know you may find hidden surprises ( I did
.
Google Alerts is another excellent option to get alerts when someone posts something about you and your brands online beside Twitter Search ,Google Search Yahoo Search Bing Search etc.
Important tip
Whenever you are searching for yourself on google, first logout of google to see the correct picture otherwise google will show you personalised results customised for you which may be misleading and prevent you from looking at big picture.
