Nine Foods In My Freezer That Always Help me to Eat Healthy
12Late from work and there is hardly any time to cook dinner, A well stocked freezer can help you to cook quick and easy dinner within no time. Few essential healthy ingredients in your freezer make it much easier to eat home cooked meal rather than ordering a takeout from neighbourhood restaurant.
Here is list of few of the ingredients which are almost always present in my fridge.
Pizza base:
If you have always hungry teens at home like me, this is especially your life saver. My teens are big pizza fans so whenever I have time I try to make whole wheat pizza base at home and store them in freezer for later use. There is always pizza sauce and few chopped veggies available in my freezer. Both of them love to have different toppings, so it’s a win-win situation for me I practically do not have to do much for dinner and still there is a fuss free { and actually quick n healthy} dinner waiting for us.
Paneer cubes With few rustic and rich add-ins like green olives, mushrooms and some bread cubes with some other add ins and sauces of your choice you get to eat a delicious one pot meal. Otherwise have some basic sauces and pastes like arabiata, coriander pesto or basil pesto at hand toss paneer cubes with pesto and pan fry/grill them. They make a great filling for toasted sandwiches. Serve them with some quick and easy salad for a quick and healthy meal.
Fruits and vegetables Chopped fruits and vegetables in your freezer is a great advantage { you can chop them at convenient time or buy already chopped bags from supermarket} Luckily I have a helper in the kitchen so whenever she has time she does the chopping part whenever I am short on time and freeze them to use later. To is much more easier to throw some frozen vegetables for a quickstir fry if you like to eat stir fries{ we love them} or add some home made bhuna masala for a quick curry to go with rice or Chapati. {I always stock some frozen peas, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, sweet corn etc}.
Whole grain Bread
If you store your bread over the counter, it tends to spoil easily so when I bake bread or buy it from store I use the require amount and store rest in the freezer to use it later. In case you are wondering about whether freezing the bread is a good idea or not { I had this doubt} let me tell you it freezes beautifully, and do not take much time to thaw and is ready to use again within no time.
Pesto and Sauces
If you have some basic sauces like, arabiata (for pizza and pasta), pesto like coriander pesto or basil pesto , harrisa paste and some bhuna masala at hand {I prefer homemade if you like store-bought you can use that too}, you are sorted. With few of these sauces available in your fridge you can rustle up any type of meal within a very short time.
Nuts
Full of healthy fats, they are always a staple in my fridge; they make great addition to quick salads, as dessert toppings or in baking. Storing them in freezer helps to increase their shelf life as it prevents the oils in the nuts from going rancid.
Cheese
If you have kids this one you just can not ignore, cream cheese, chedder cheese, mozerella and some gouda is on the must buy grocery list. I forget easily so some of the half used packs almost always used to get moldy, one day after reading about freezing the cheese with exception of cream cheese I shred rest three and store this shredded cheese in freezer , it thaws almost instantly and there is no change in flavour or texture.
