Last one to reach at event I missed out our usual chitchat
and catching up session … oh! How I have come to love it!! Bad traffic at Delhi
but reached just in time, before the actual discussion started and Vivacious
Shamita took us to journey of tasting of wine by learning about its components,
how to enjoy it and what food to eat with it.

Shamita and Jyoti Informed us about an exquisite wine collection by Four seasons
which captures the colors and moods of four seasons.
Three reds (Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz
and Merlot); three whites (Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc and Viognier); and,
a Rosé (Blush). The Barrique Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
and Barrique Reserve Shiraz are the premium offerings of the Four Seasons portfolio.
These wines have been aged in imported French oak barrels for 9 months before
being bottled.

Started the first round with a still white wine Chenin Blanc,
as the name tells us it’s made with Chenin Blanc grapes. Shamita told us it’s a
fruity wine with aromas of lime peel, sweet apples, guava and banana, a wine
just right for pairing with starters or appetizers. I just had a sip or two of
it (working day, had two meeting scheduled after that) though could not smell or
taste guava I definitely got a hint of banana.

Appetizer and fruity wine done with and next came still red wine
Merlot a robust red wine more suitable to pair with spicy Indian main course. Amidst
Purba’s one liners and preceding burst of cheerful conversation, Shamita walked us
through more aspects of wine tasting , about right temperature to store your
wines, intensity of various wines and how that affects the richness of flavours
and taste when paired with particular food.

Not an alcohol person myself, but love to read about wines {hubs loves his
occasional glass} , I always thought that there are rules for pairing a
particular wine with a particular type of food. Pleasantly surprised to learn
that there are no rules except this single one “Let your own palette guide you
and decide which comination works best for you”. Now that’s music to my ears as
I never like to be bounded by rules ‘not even my food’ somehow I find it too
restrictive to acquire new learning’s and understandings.

By the time this lovely red wine was poured conversation drifted down to
antioxidants, tannins, yeast fermentation .. Yes, the things that are closer to
my heart. As people discussed health effects, me and Sangeeta agreed on one
point that though red wine in moderation is known for its potential health benefits,
but at some point health benefits specifically from wine are over hyped too {will discuss that some other time}.
We talked about shapes of wine glasses, type of glasses
suitable for particular wine and ageing time for different types of wines, cheat-sheet
for making wine in modern times and so much more that this single post may not
be sufficient for that
